Side by Side: Irish Dance & Tap Dance

These workshops will explore and demonstrate the connections between Irish dance and American tap dance and will be presented by dancers and performers Kieran Jordan and Kevin Doyle, from the US, and Miltown Malbay man Aidan Vaughan. Free to all students who have registered for the full week. Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, the 7th, 8th and 10th of July, from 2:30 pm to 4:30 pm at the Mill Marquee.

And on Thursday, July 9th, in the Community Centre, at 2:00 pm, Kieran and Kevin will present a performance-based lecture/demonstration on the same topic entitled “Far from Home but Close to the Floor: the Irish roots of American tap dance.”

Kieran’s classes are non-competitive, and are designed for adults as well as teens (ages 14 and up). Advance registration is recommended, and for your convenience, payment can now be made on-line. Students may also attend on a drop-in basis where indicated.

Beginner Sean-nós Dance

4-week session

Sean-nós (“old style”) Irish dance is a joyful expression of movement and sound. Considered to be one of the oldest forms of Irish dancing, sean-nós is an improvised solo style, which includes footwork danced close-to-the-floor, a relaxed upper body, and a playful dialogue between the dance and the music. This class is for beginners – no experience needed! Students will learn the basic movements and rhythms that progress into popular steps found in Connemara sean-nós dancing. Please wear shoes with a smooth hard sole. Taught by Hannah Pelton

Beginner 1 Irish Dance

4-week session

For adult beginners, this class will introduce the basic footwork and technique of traditional Irish step dance. Students will learn soft shoe dances, including reels and jigs, with a focus on alignment, balance, strength and coordination. Students will also learn to understand the structure and timing of traditional Irish music. Please bring light sneakers or Irish dance soft shoes to class. Taught by Hannah Pelton

Beginner 2 Irish Dance

4-week session

For students who already have some experience, this class will continue with the basic footwork and technique of traditional Irish step dance. Students will learn soft shoe and hard shoe dances, including reels, jigs, and hornpipes, with a focus on alignment, balance, strength and coordination. Students will also learn to understand the structure and timing of traditional Irish music. New students — please bring Irish dance soft shoes and hard shoes to class. Taught by Hannah Pelton

Intermediate Irish Dance

4-week session

This class focuses on traditional Irish step dance technique, as well as group céilí dancing and original choreography. Each class will include a thorough warm-up and strengthening exercises. Students enrolling in this class must have at least 2 years of experience in soft and hard shoe dancing. Taught by Hannah Pelton

INTERMEDIATE and ADVANCED IRISH DANCE

4-week session

This class focuses on traditional and “old style” Irish step dance technique, and on learning complete series of steps. Each class will include a thorough warm-up with alignment and strengthening exercises. Repertoire will be drawn from traditional and old-style step dance material as well as Kieran’s performance choreography and original steps. Students enrolling in this class should have intermediate/advanced level proficiency in soft and hard shoe Irish dancing, along with an interest in choreography and performance.
